Ode to the Homeless

Evelyn Baruch 1935 (Chicago. IL)

Where do the homeless go
when there's no home to go to?
Where  do they sleep?
Where do. they eat?
Where do they rest
their weary feet?
Once the world
was at their bidding.
Now Fate scoffs,
It was only kidding.
They live in tents
below a highway overpass.
They are the unseen,
unheard underclass
Look about you.
They're all around you.
Just open your eyes
and you'll see them.
Be grateful, my friends.
But for the grace of God,
you could be them.
