If but a petal could not feel the fall...

Roberto Suárez Torres 1983 (New York)

if but a petal could not feel the fall,
a rose in the sun's eyes has earned her crown;
long and thick stem, as if a palm tree tall
on steps whiteness, that of stars have reached gowns.

laying slopes green grass bending in meadows
glad if at sunrise parched, bold need to sway,
when still, tread thee paths fragrant with aloes,
as locks hands my skin rubs water-nymphs gay;

calm, steady drops heard creeks that share tones,
for are both blessing and belligerence called,
glowered at, dark, deep, blinding bright shone,
with chains gilt as that a seat by thralled;

a tough life green, some select as a farm,
atop rocky landscapes, great and strong arms.
