Sweetheart

Douglas H. Mc Clintock 1934 (Sarnia, Ontario)

Bette and me were married about a year,
Two days before pay day, not much  food
She packed my lunch bucket to go to work
My bucket seemed light, but what the heck !

At work when it was lunch time
Took my lunch bucket to the table with the guys,
I opened the bucket and out flew a large card,
Only one apple inside, whew !

One guy picked up the card
And read it out loud,
It was a Valentine card, he said lookie, lookie,
Doug's  got a sweetheart !

They all stared to laugh
And make fun of me
When I said,  " where's your card
From your sweetheart !

They all shut up
Knowing I had seized the moment
When Bette expressed her love
I will never forget !

Now I look back with a sigh
On that St Valentine's day,
Two young people madly in love
Only a card but what a message !
