Hoodlum

Elias Tibane 1965 (Pretoria)

Draped in a faded shirt and ragged denim
filthy hands tucked in pockets
he waits impatiently in a dark alley
Like an animal of prey
his anguished bloodshot eyes rove the placid scene
littered with rusted cans and beer bottles
still bearing the tattered labels of previous contents
With fetid skin glistening with sweat
he hides behind grotesque walls
An involuntary smile belies evil thoughts
to maim and kill innocent people
A victim's gasp for breath turns into sullen grief
as death betrays life
Convulsing on the ground is another statistic
in the hands of the merciless hoodlum.

About this poem

It is about the remorseless hoodlums who steal, rob, maim and kill innocent people for money.
