October 31

Laura Dotson 1964 (Pittsburgh, Pa)

Halloween is coming
the night is growing dim
Howling at the moon
has become a distant hymn

The animals are hungry
they're searching for their prey
The children of the night
keep their precious wolves at bay

When the clock strikes the hour
of the witches vigilant flight
the dead walk the earth
darkness swallows light

The night's ghostly laughter
fills the air
Teasing and taunting
so just you beware

Walk by a graveyard
if you must
don't give in to
your curious lust

Stay in your bed
with the covers drawn
only arise
when night becomes dawn
