The Escape

I use to love you.
When the tulip trees were in bloom,
When the lightning bugs flashed,
While the cicadas played us a tune.

I use to love you.
When we stood before God
And promised our love forever true
Through the hard times together trod.

I use to love you.
When I first felt the Wyoming wind blow,
And saw the prairie grass brown and green in waves,
When you kissed me under the Big Sky so slow.

I use to love you.
You promised to be tender and to love
Even when I was unlovable and scared
Wait...why did you just yell at me and shove?

I use to love you.
Why are you so mad at me?
I cooked your favorite dinner,
I love you so much can't you see?!

I use to love you.
Now you lay in wait,
For me to say the wrong thing
On thin ice I've learned to skate.

I use to love you.
I cannot measure up
These game you like to play
I think I've had enough.

I use to love you.
Then again maybe not.
It was the pretty lies, the half-truths,
And in your web I was caught.

I use to love him.
But you see he wasn't real.
I've now awakened to cruel reality,
Thank God my fate he did not seal.
