When Colours Decay

Nicole Evert 1999 (Cape Town)

A painting was your life,
Like colours, they did collide.
So happy, the picture in the frame;
So much so, hues were a beautiful stain.
For they started out so very bright,
But soon began to fade to light -
For the shade ever glowing and oh-so cheery
Has left itself looking weary.
As the brightness starts to dim,
The lasting pigments grew so grim;
For it was a faint reminder of a sunny day –
A time of joy with no decay.
But now my happiness rots alone,
Like a dimming image of a corpse on its throne,
So I sit and hope someone can resurrect me,
So perhaps I can, once again, see life’s beauty.

About this poem

This is a poem inspired by the song "Painting" by Blindside, which spoke to me in so many ways. It's about how depression begins to grab hold and drains the good, or 'colour' out of your life, leaving you feel rotten and alone, hoping that the colours will come back.

I'm a twenty-two year old South African girl who channels my emotions through my writing; it is not only a creative outlet, but a psychological outlet for me, as well. Animals are my biggest passion. I have two bunnies, two cats, two leopard geckos, three snakes, and 28 tarantulas... I might be a little obsessed! But they are my children and I love them all! I struggle a lot with mental health, and most of my writings will reflect it in some way or another, as it's also a coping mechanism for me, but I feel like sharing the stories with others might be helpful - sometimes it's good to know you aren't alone in your feelings. I don't really know what else there is to say about me, I'd like to think I'm rather simple and straight forward. more…
