The Grass Dancers

The Grass Dancer

As moonlight shimmered upon the grass

And stars glistened the dark

The drums and the singers began

I watched him walk into the arena

His feet moving to the beat of the drum

The fringe on his regalia

Flowed outward in the breeze

His face raised to the moon

A hint of a smile upon his lips

Eyes shining like fire light

He danced dipping high and low

Twirling and whirling round and round

One leg in the air the other stepping down

Does his feet not feel the wet grassy earth?

He dances unaware others are watching

I take a drink of water to wet my parched dry lips

As I sit and watch with awe and wonder

Soon what was one in the circle grew

As other men silently joined in

They danced in a  circle

Lifting themselves high

Letting no dust gather under their feet

I watch as my heart pounded in my chest

My breath came faster with each of their steps

My mind began spinning around with them

Then the drums and the singing came to an end

Their feet now stood firm on the land.
