More Than Grateful

Doug Haberman 1959 (Albuquerque, NM)

June 22

First the softness of the morning
Then the yellow light pours in
I roll over and I see you
With the sheet up to your chin
Song of sparrows carries to us
I reach out and stroke your hair
And my heartbeat says I’m feeling
More than grateful you are there

Noon on Sunday, you come running
In the ash tree there’s a nest
Little hatchling, beak wide open
So you force me to get dressed
As we eat lunch on the back porch
You compare the dogwood buds
To amethyst encasing emerald
Once again I fall in love

In the dark we face each other
Take a look back at the day
As we share these quiet moments
Fears and worries fall away
Once I hear your rhythmic breathing
I reach out and stroke your hair
And my heartbeat says I’m feeling
More than grateful you are there

I feel that your poem should have been a winner. I love the intimacy of it and how you provide the snapshot descriptions of your beloved and why you are forever grateful.
