A letter to : "My father"

Sanaga 1998 (Tembisa)

A Letter To:  “My Father”

I still feel like an unnoticed sperm, immersed,
Scattered, pearled inside my queen’s cavern.

I am told that you exist, you with no name,
Yet a big space in my heart
I cannot see your face
Nor hear your voice.

When you lost your love for her,
Did you lose mine as well?

I’ve probably already met the man of my dreams and told him to go away
Because I lack trust
Just like you and hi left, they too won’t stay.

Sometimes all you can do is lay in bed and hope
To fall asleep before you fall apart
But how do you forgive when the apology never comes?

I’m crushed each time I remember that you are out there
Living a life unknown.
Do you not remember your child?

I think I’ll miss you forever
Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky
And all I can do is hope
Hope that when you close your eyes,
Your mind is filled with thoughts of me.
Your daughter.

About this poem

I wrote a letter years ago directed at my biological father who at the time I had never met before, this was the only way I knew how to communicate my hurt and 20+ years later I can share this as the healing between me and him continues.
