A Pageant Tale

Benjamin Brantley 1984 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

On a castle court in the motherland
Dwelt a fair princess dressed in soft raiment.
She was brave-at-heart, noble, and street-wise
Of our sovereign Lord, highly deputized.

Men came from afar just to catch a glimpse
Of her beauty,...they braved the elements
Dared to cross oceans, climb the highest mount
But to her nobleman her heart was bound

Knights on gallant steeds and a caravan
Came from the far East to the British isle
Once her fame had spread in folktale by word
They gave her honor for what they had heard

Then it came to pass when the time was come
For her nobleman to sojourn with her
That an enemy from a northern town
Planned an overthrow for to steal her crown

But as stories go, and this - just a tale
A knightly hero goes to save the day
As the battle raged, on-and-on they fought
Till the dust settled. Was it all for naught?
