Futile Attempt

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

It may seem to have gone.
Tearfully witnessed,
Fading away.
Into the vastness,
Of a limitless Universe.
Dark and yet mysteriously,
Home of ever changing and unknown...
Diverse life forms.
Yet to explore or thought to adventure.

And here on Earth,
As it appears common sense disappearing.
Fast in this vastness without a rescue crew?
There seems still signs of life.
Clinging desperately onto...
An independent devoted faith.
Praying.
For the return of common sense.
Regardless of the opposition they face.
With ignorance spreading,
More threatening...
Than the high price one pays,
To live and be victimized by the cost of living.

It is ignorance that threatens humanity.
And life on Earth.
With a losing to value,
The worth kept to keep common sense...
An irreplaceable treasure.

'What is this 'vigil' about.
Why are there so many people,
Standing holding candles with eyes closed?'

'Rumor has it,
They are praying for evidence...
Common sense,
Will once again be bestowed upon them.
And...
Believe this or not,
They are the same ones...
Protesting against,
Truth to be taught to their children.'

'Where do you come up with this stuff?
That's crazy.'

'I thought it was too.
Until that guy over there selling the candles?
Showed and told me,
The fortune he was making.
And...
Considering multiple franchises,
Around the World.'

'So...
What did you say?'

'Me?
I didn't say anything.
Here is his business card.
What do you think?'

'I...uh...hmmm...
I wonder,
What the minimal investment would be?
Although...
Futile would be the attempt,
To convince my bank...
A second mortgage on my home,
Is for a loan to invest in candles!'

'Tell them the truth!'

'Today?
Do what?
Tell the truth?
To a banker?
I would have better results,
Trying to convince my cable provider...
My cable bill is too high.
And I need a package,
That represents only the channels I watch.'

'That to do,
Would be impossible for anyone...
To give you the time.
And attention to you too?
Just lie.
And be patriotic about it!'
