Denial Has No Exit Doors

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

Shocked into fear.
And appearing amazed.
By the truth these days,
Many are unable to face.
Yet behind them chases.

Denial leaves no exit doors.
Or relief from the pain of traps.
Carried on backs.
Pretending this burden to bear,
Is not theirs to have created.

And here most of us are,
Wondering to wander...
Closer to the edge of insanity.
Leaning as far as we possibly can,
To peek down to see...
If this rumored mental abyss,
Is as bottomless...
As it has been alleged to be.

'Excuse me,
Your eyes are clear.
And bright.
So...
That leaves me to assume,
You value your life.
Should I assume I am right about that?'

'You are correct.
Yes.
I do value my life.'

'Then why would you risk it?
Bend over to look down,
Into a bottomless abyss?
When there are signs of warnings,
That state...

IF YOU ARE STILL FORTUNATE ENOUGH,
TO BE READING THIS?
KEEP THIS IN MIND,
UNLESS YOU ARE STRAPPED...
TO A PARACHUTE?
WHY LOOK DOWN,
INTO A BOTTOMLESS ABYSS?
WHEN YOUR CHANCES TO SURVIVE,
IS ZERO, NONE, NADA, ZILCH.

Tell me this,
Is looking intelligent...
To appear having common sense?
An act practiced?
Had you been tested to ensure,
This was a fact?
And you are here trying to convince yourself,
You can not be that dumb.
Empty in the head?
Leaving crickets bored of hearing,
Themselves echo.
Or...
Unlike others here who are tourists.
You have been sent to demonstrate,
The many ways...
A choosing of stupidity these days,
Is more of a preference.
Than being intimidated to appear,
A fool afraid of truth to face.
And brave enough to jump away from it.'

'No.
I'm just someone,
Seeking to find new and challenging ways...
To express and achieve,
A broadening of my self awareness.
I don't buy into,
That ignorant is bliss nonsense.'
