In the Confessional

Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)

Hear me out, but damn me not
Most pious among women
Intercede for me,
I’ve sinned a lot today.

If beauty were to walk
I’ve stared too long in lust
Graver have I sinned
Deeper do I sink.

O sweet Priest, freeze for me!
A sinner wants to pray
Close your holy eyes
While lips makes the confession.

Your tulips coal ar’ red
Touch my lips with them
Purge me of my sins
And make a sinner clean.

You’ve made a sinner holy
O dear saint, with your kisses
I need my sweet sins back
So kiss me one more time.
