Try

Matthew Thornbury 1974 (Lansing, MI)

                                         Try

You will never know the way I know.
You will never hope the way I do.
     I can yell louder.
     I can run faster.
I can out do all the others.
     I  Am the bulls horns!

Like a building crumbling to the ground, I fall.
All parts are with me, but seem to have stopped
     working.
But this will not budge my soul an inch.
For I am up again, only to go down again.
But as long as I keep trying...

About this poem

I wrote this poem when I was homeless on the streets in Lansing, Michigan. I was a lost but hopeful 18 year old. Later I had submitted this poem on poetry.com in 2000. The poem was published in a book of different poets by poetry.com. Today, the website has seemed to change and no poems by Matthew Thornbury appear here. So here it is again, guys. A poem about not giving up. This was a time in my life(one of many)when giving up seemed to be the only choice I was good at.

Matthew Thornbury

I was born in 1974 in Lansing, Michigan. 3 months later I was adopted by Barbara and Bill Thornbury. They were a warm, loving, and happy couple. Though I had a great childhood, I took it for granted. My mother spoiled me, yet both parents instilled a strong work ethic. Whenever I asked my father for something, he always replied the same,"You can have whatever you can afford." For reasons I am still learning today, I acted out a lot and got in a lot of trouble. Particularly in school. I was sort of a dork, and had one or two actual friends growing up. I loved reading and movies. I loved comics and science. I even loved art, but I have always had a passion for writing. I have had quite a journey so far, but its too long to put here. Any way, Im 47, and I am just now really living and enjoying life and gaing my want to write again. more…
