Until That One Time

George Cook 1934 (Lanarkshire)

Until that one time when I met you
In my thoughts love had no place
And I couldn’t see
Things changing for me
Till I saw your smiling face
From then on though times became different
And I had a change of view
When you did agree
On a chance for me
To meet one more time with you
I did, then I asked the same question
Before I bade you goodnight
When you answered “Yes,
There’s no need to guess”
I knew I’d done something right
The question that I had to ask now
Somewhat different than before
“If you do agree,
Will you marry me
And be us forever more”
Your answer didn’t surprise me and
In my thoughts love found a place
And now I could see
Things had changed for me
Because of your smiling face

George Cook

I was born, grew up, and worked in Scotland. I got married in July 1960 and migrated to Australia in 1965 under the then Assisted Passage Migration Scheme. For nine years in Scotland, 1956 to 1965, I worked for a large photographic company which also operated in Australia. I worked there until 1994 when I took early retirement. By this time the children had all grown up it gave my wife and I the chance to think about going ‘back home’ to visit relatives and relations. We did in fact have three visits 1998, 1999 and 2000. My wife and I shared our lives and times together for the rest of 58 years and four months when, sadly, my wife passed away in hospital. more…
