Beauty
Bodies, what a beautiful and unique shrine to each person. Bodies, a sculpture of clay. Constantly getting molded by society. Always feeling “too thin” or “too fat” or “not pretty” or any of those evil whispers, the snakes whisper into every girl’s, man’s, woman’s, boy’s ear. If you love your body, you are egotistical and not as pretty as you think. If you hate your body, you are a pick-me and need to worry about someone other than yourself. I used to go online and look at people's problems to feel better about mine. Now trying that makes me feel selfish because there are so many worse things in the world and I'm crying because I want to be skinny? I refuse to go into detail about my journey because it frightens me that someone may repeat in my footsteps. But I remember thinking I don't deserve to eat. “STARVE STARVE STARVE” is all I heard in my head. These body images got in my head so much I wanted to die. Do you know how messed up it is that the media is so scary and hurtful that from ages 11-12 I wanted to die? But all bodies are beautiful. Unless you aren't an hourglass figure with wide hips and large lips, essentially a bratz doll you are ugly and unhealthy. I dedicate this poem to the fact that there is no ugly. Fat, skinny, wide, thin, no one cares as much as your own mind. Everyone is so worried about wearing too much or too little makeup and being pretty just as you are. They don't even worry if YOU are “ugly” . My own mind is killing me slowly and it's because of these beauty standards. Large breasts. Large butt. Small waist. Large hips. A thigh gap. Small nose. Slim face. This is the true “Beauty and the Beast.” We are both the beauty and the beast. We are the monster inside. We are ALL killing ourselves slowly. Some slower than others. And after your brain goes through this you tell everyone they are beautiful but can you take your own advice? No. Beauty standards are too high. If that is beauty we are ALL naturally ugly. So who's ready to turn into “real beauty?” You are only pretty if you are plastic and hungry.
