Humans

Roberto Suárez Torres 1983 (New York)

How each human from water and dust,
standing naked, dependent & alone,
of a gentle touch in the moonless groan
sheds tears with wide eyes any craft may rust;

with what we all build, tame, sail, read and write,
in virtue of iron, silver and gold...
copper as well, tales mother earth has told,
sharp, huge and absent tears, frozen... and bright;

through the breast of mankind driven a stake,
like quick thunder that splits a quiet tree;
waning sunlight and clouds swiftly awake

twist and turns found on ominous leas,
such scarlet wrath from depths of darkness great,
flourishing in the fields with tyranny.
