The Avoca Mines

The mines of Avoca are known world wide,
Where mining thrived then ebbed as markets declined.
They dotted the vale all along each hill side,
But now lay dormant until the next boom is uncovered.

In the heyday of mining years, local communities were aglow,
Which brought prosperity to the area, and towns did grow,
New roads and rail lines were built by mines long ago,
To bring ore to the sea ports of Wicklow and Arklow.

Are the deposits, like fairy gold, gone or there's still more?
Junior companies are licenced to go survey and explore.
Results can be encouraging but nothing heretofore,
Feasibility studies and market conditions will reveal more.

In ’82, the last operating mine shut the door,
The mine, skilfully managed by a Canadian named Kilgour,
Who hailed from Brandon and reposed in Penticton,
He was pledged to the venture, let’s reflect on his dedication.

The Avoca Mines era has left the world with a legacy,
A wonder in modern underground mining methodology,
Stope mining is copied or adapted and used by mines globally,
Long hole mining in a stope requires accurate technology.

Ask yourself today, is Avoca ready for a new mine?
What challenges must be overcome to bring one online?
Should history be a factor? Or a possible detractor?
Will consultation, planning and permits be a protractor?

It is very well known that mines are a cyclic venture,
Requiring risk of capital, investment, and private debenture,
For a new mine in Avoca, to all, it should be clearly understood,
It would enrich Avoca’s history and the prosperity would be good.
