Will you?

Will you show me where the light is?
That I might find my way.
Will you show me true happiness?
That I might smile someday.

Will you show me where the path lies?
And I’ll be on my way.
Will you show me where my heart is?
And I’ll cherish love today.

Will you show me where the sun shines?
I’ll bask in its warm glow.
Will you show me where the truth is?
I’ll bear witness that I know.

Will you guide me past the darkness?
That harrows up my soul.
Will you guide me through the valleys?
That keeps me sad and low.

Will you walk beside me, Father?
Oh, take my hand, I pray!
Will you walk with me forever?
Oh, bless me, Lord, I pray!

About this poem

Several years ago, when one of my children was experiencing an especially difficult moment of depression and sadness, I went with them on a walk outside. My child was wearing a winter coat with a hood. My child paused and stood with their back up to a light pole, where I took a picture of my child. The picture spoke to me of the hopelessness of depression, yet there was a bright light at my child's back. Sometimes, we turn our backs away from the sunlight and wonder where the sun has gone. Sometimes, we need the help of a parent to help us find that light again.
