cruel man's dawn

as my gaze falls to the ground, it speaks
"dear me."
i've been such a fool to look for the words to my heart when
they were here all along.

i've looked for them in the wrong places
between old lanterns that light dark alleyways
and blood-stained cobblestone
in the bleak of night,
when they were hidden

in the fit of laughter and warm coffee on the table
in this swelling feel that grazed me like wind, which
before i knew it, had devoured me whole.

they were here all along.
ripped out of my chest by the early morning sun and
layed out in front of me–

so what am i to do
but smile?
