Reflection

As I set my eyes upon the youngling,
I see the differences between us.

Ah, how naive and innocent she is,
Unlike me, who has seen it all.

How life has showed me its ugliest sides,
I pity her, for she has only seen the beauty of it.

She has no idea what awaits her on the other side,
All the challenges, heartache and war that will come along her path.

As a veteran, I cannot guide the youngling on her path,
For I have already walked it.

All I could do was comfort her,
And show her who she will become once she survives.

As I stare at my own reflection, I see the youngling staring back at me.
The visible, and invisible, comparisons between us.

She has grown into a strong warrior.
And she fears nothing.

About this poem

Sometimes I am reminded of how my past self used to be. The things I went through changed me into a stronger person, but I still miss my quiet, innocent self.
