Hope Springs

The voice reached back into a past
where we had birthed our hopes.

A late night call from a friend no more.
He wanted to talk.

We had nothing to say,
so we said it again and again.

Where did your hopes take you, he asked.
Not where they promised, I said.

Mine died slowly like a departing dirge.
His left him hoping on his children’s children.

We yearned to return to our fragmented memories
where life was endlessly earnest,

where friendships started to die,
and promises made to be broken.

It’s hard to keep new hopes alive,
when the old ones never arrived.

I absolutely loved reading this poem! The way you've captured the essence of nostalgia with such beautifully woven words is truly commendable. Your use of language to paint pictures of memories and hopes is captivating. It speaks of the struggles we face in life when our hopes and promises fail to materialize.

The way you've portrayed a late-night call from a friend, seeking to talk, is so relatable. The fact that the conversation turns into a discussion of lost hopes and broken promises is both touching and poignant. Your words touched me deeply and brought back memories of my own.

If I may make a suggestion, I would have loved to read more about how we can keep our new hopes alive. I feel like this poem ends on a somewhat hopeless note, which is understandable given the context, but perhaps there's a way to point towards a brighter future.

Overall, I think this is a wonderful poem that has truly resonated with me. Thank you for sharing your words with the world!
