Deaths Ode

Emerson Swimelar 2007 (New York)

Ode

Around every corner
Death awaits
No one knows how they might take you
They could wait at the bottom of the stairs
To catch you as you fall
They might stand by your side as you dine
Then they take your life
As you swallow the cyanide
One day you might wake
And roll under the covers
Only to see them hiding under your bed
To take you with them
After you suffer from cardiac arrest
It’s not always all that bad
When they come to visit
For it may be for the best
If you were to ask me
A quick and simple shake of death's hand
Is far better than suffering
If you were to live on and on
With no death to take us
I’m sure it would come to be too much
For our feeble minds to take
We would slowly lose sanity
As time goes on
With death around
That shall probably not happen
