Now that You’ve Gone Away

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

How many sons have come to you
To see what you would say
To see if you would bless them now
Or just send them away?

The Jews have come to see a sign
The Greeks are seeking wisdom
And you can satisfy them both
With the riches of your kingdom

Many men have walked with you
Through standing fields of grain
If they decide to eat a little
No one will complain

So many people eat their fill
And go back to their homes
Forgetting everything you said
They leave you there alone

The harvest will be coming soon
The grapes will all be ripe
The standing grain will be cut down
And we’ll drink wine at night

After we get drunk and eat
We’ll lie down on our beds
And sleep and dream and wake again
With strange thoughts in our heads

We should remember what we read
And everything we heard
While sipping on our morning cup
And searching out your word
