Buy Yourself Flowers

Kaushik Ghosh 1979 (Calcutta)

On my way to work everyday,
I see a roadside florist. Old.
Sitting amidst happy colors -
pansy, roses and marigold.
Some come there for wedding bouquets
Some come there on a happy day –
And then, there are people who buy
Flowers for days that ain’t so gay.

I stopped one day and asked the man –
“Old man, may I ask you a thing?”
The smiling man did oblige me
And said, “ Sir, you may. Anything!”
So I stooped down and then asked – “Man,
You have sold flowers all this time.
For the moments of joy and pain
And of course you have made some dime.
Tell me one thing, you old fellow
Who, who gives a flower to you?
A flower for your special day
A flower for a day brand new.”

And as I asked him, it did seem
A shadow casted on his eye.
But that was for a moment and
It did not last. Away, it fly.

He was back with a smiling face
And said, "Listen, O' dear friend,
It is you, you and only you
Who does go with you till the end.
So I give me a flower when
I wake up - give it everyday-
Coz I've known for me it's just me
Who is there, surely there to stay.
Yes, it's the last day that I am
Worried of, the day of last breath -
You know something my dear fellow
You cannot carry your own wreath.
So at times I feel bit lonely,
At times I feel bit down and sad.
Don't have one to buy me flower,
But then, don't think it's all that bad.

You gotta know one thing for sure
You gotta accept and be brave -
With or without friends and people
You are all alone in your grave."

I stepped back into my car. As
He smiled I pondered on his take –
This old man surely has a point
And you can no way mark it fake.

Buy yourself flowers O’ my friends
You need to buy it every day –
The old man surely said it right,
It’s you, for you, who’s gonna stay.
