A Promise Kept

“I looked into the forest, to see a great big deer.
I pulled out my rifle, my shot was so clear.”

I started this poem, but that’s as far as I got.
I’d have more time to finish.  At least that’s what I thought.
I made a promise to someone, I’d write a poem about a deer.
I’d never break a promise, to someone no longer here.
I intend to finish that poem.  That someday I’ll do.
But this poem, right now Clarence. . . I dedicate to you:

My Great Uncle Clarence, indeed he was so great.
The littlest things in life, only he would appreciate.

His big collection of many different things, made him quite unique.
And anyone he came across, he’d let them have a peek.

His antlers, his antiques. . . he was proud of all he had.
He reminded me of someone, I think it was my dad.

Sometimes I look at pictures, to see his smiling face.
I find relief in knowing, he’s in a better place.

He was a special person, with so much yet to give.
But I know that he is grateful for the wonderful life he lived.

But I will fulfill my promise, however long it takes.
Because this promise made to Clarence, I don’t have the heart to break.

(DEDICATED TO THE LOVING MEMORY OF MY GREAT UNCLE CLARENCE)

Jolene M Lansverk

Jolene Mary Eden Lansverk was born on April 8, 1979. She is the daughter of Richard and Sandy Lansverk of Benson, Minnesota. Jolene has always enjoyed writing, whether it be short stories, essays, or poetry. She started writing when she was about thirteen years old. Her very first poem was entitled “Goodbye”, dedicated to her late grandmother, Louise Weber. Ever since that day, Jolene has kept on writing. Of all the forms of writing that she does, Jolene appreciates poetry the best. She feels it’s one of the only ways in which she can express how she truly feels inside. Some of Jolene’s poems have been recognized and published in a few anthology books. “The River” along with “Thin Enough”, for example, have been published in The National Library of Poetry book, and “I Have These Two Friends” has been published in a book entitled The Echos From The Silence. Jolene plans to continue writing and hopefully will have more of her poetry published in the years to come. Jolene’s creative writing teacher quotes, “I’ve never met anybody who can write such deep and meaningful literature. Jolene believes in everything she puts down on paper. It’s inspiring.” more…
