Birding

Ian McCleary 1992 (Morris Plains, NJ)

I make a journal of the birds I see, writing down their names on paper.

These aren't like the angels found in scripture, invoking fear in the people they are sent to.
These creatures are neither angels nor wood sprites.
These gifts give something more to us than revelations may say.
It is prophecy, but one gently tapping us on our shoulder, directing our eyes to the life that is given away by us to our phones and computers.

The docile look they give when they turn their heads in a pair of binoculars. The innocence of their pose.
The colors which stripe and blot their face, even on the face of a meagre sparrow are patches of yellow feathers.
Our attention to these details are lost
by our attachment to our way of life.
