SPECTRES

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Winged spectres soaring
Through the twilight sky,
Searching for movement below
Innocents are surely soon to die.

Monsters from an evil time
Wreaking havoc in the night,
Zooming around the houses
Like some ancient blight.

Zooming around a village
These primordial terrors,
Creatures from another clime
Mother Nature's greatest errors.

Hunting after Darkfall
Within this doom-cursed town,
Spectres of death are winging
Until suddenly swooping down:

Swooping after some living thing
That very soon will be dying,
As the spectres peck and rend
Another victim shrilly crying.

Winged spectres soaring
Through the atmosphere,
Shrilling in the cool night
Spreading death and fear,

Gliding through the ozone
Within this loathsome place,
Reigning down destruction
Remnants of a forgotten race.
