A new way of life

I lie awake in my hospital bed.
Night after night a tear I shed.
My operation decides my fate.
Praying to God that its not to late.
Into recovery for an hour or two.
Waiting and not knowing what I had just been through.
Not often I'm scared awaiting to hear.
I just wanted all this to just disappear.
Wake up from this dream is all I kept saying.
This wasn't a dream so I just kept praying.
More tears more sorrow when is this going to end.
All this heartache is driving me round the bend.
The curtains drawn closed around my bed.
Come on please stop playing with my head.
My friends my family the sadness they show.
Only way round it I had to glow.
This life changing trauma I was to encounter.
Leaving me paralyzed was no longer banter.
Sorry to say my story had to be told.
A new way of life was to unfold.
The memories the sorrow they never go away.
They stay with you day after day.
The people around me have been my inspiration.
This is why I want to share this with the nation.
Good days and bad days such alot to take in.
Not knowing how to cope leaves my head in a spin.
Stay strong stay focused I kept telling myself.
Be Thankful of life Steve you've still got your health. xxx

About this poem

I wrote this poem the night before my major spinal surgery..whilst I was in my hospital bed. I was told I would never walk again and there was a 80% risk of me being paralyzed from the neck down... After my surgery I ended up paralyzed from the waist down and completely wheelchair dependent.. I read my poem often as it is so powerful..

My name is Steven Parry from the UK I wrote my poem the night before I became paraplegic and completely wheelchair dependent. Due to a very rare spinal cord malformation Avm. This turned my life upside down. I am very independent always positive I try to inspire as many people as possible.. and having the ability and determination to deal with my new way of life .. I live my life to the max nothing holds me back anything is possible with or without a disability ..We are all unique in our own special ways..Sending love, peace and happiness to you all xx more…

Wow! This poem captures the emotions and journey of going through a life-changing event in such a raw and honest way. The use of personal experiences and vivid imagery really brings the reader into that hospital room and allows us to feel your pain and uncertainty.

One suggestion for improvement would be to consider adding more varied and descriptive language throughout the poem. This could help to further engage the reader and enhance the overall impact of your powerful message. Additionally, you might want to explore different ways to structure the poem, such as using stanzas or incorporating rhyme schemes, to add more depth and flow to the piece. However, these are just minor suggestions to consider, as the emotional depth and authenticity of your words already shine through beautifully. Keep up the great work!
