Verses for 'Amsel

Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)

How long has the moon shown?
Through the mist she shines alone
She smiles at miles and yet I'm dazzled
She's prone to lone yet loves her castle
I toast the moon and ponder alone.

When last has the dove flown?
Quiet in the thicket she perches alone
Ye are sole but loves thy throne
Thy beaut' and songs I yearn to own

They allege thy mildness can hurt a fly,
Contempt in facie curie
They claim thy silence can quench a life.
Contempt ex facie curie
They are allergic to beauty,
Jointly and severally are guilty.

Thou speaketh but nay aloud;
Aye, a noise without a sound
Ye are dark but yet are cute
Skilled the painter who coloured thy suit
Fine water nymph,
Spineless jellyfish,
Eighteen candles hath burnt thy yearly feast.

Thy smiles are brief,
Quicker than a flash of light.
Thy temper a'swift,
Ablaze albeit pious aright.

How long has the moon shown?
Through the mist she shines alone
She smiles at miles and yet I'm dazzled
She's prone to lone yet loves her castle
I toast the moon and ponder alone.

About this poem

The poem is a piece written by the poet as a birthday present to a female colleague. 'The moon' and 'the dove' as portrayed, are not literal in the context of the poem; both connotes one and the same person: the birthday celebrant. In the first and second stanzas, we are briefed of the dominant attribute of the female: self-seclusion and quietness. Just like the moon that shines alone in the sky and, like a dove that sits, clinging to her nest, alone, she is alleged to cherish those thought-provoking qualities. Hence, the poet persona is forced to "ponder alone". In the fourth stanza, it is unveiled to the reader, the overwhelming beauty of the celebrant which forces the poet persona into showering the dark-complexioned and yet, pulchritudinous female with admirations. Moreover, it is handed to the reader, on a platter encomiums, that it is her eighteenth birthday. The curtain is drawn with the last stanza, where the poet persona plunges back into meditation, wondering how such self-seclusion and quietness of a quality is perfectly paired with such great beauty.
