SHADOW LAND

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Shadow figures are creeping
All around in Shadow Land,
A land of sunburnt deserts
And of burnished red sand.

Behemoths are lurching
Through the streets and byways,
Wreaking mayhem through the night
But retreating by break of day.

Shadowy creatures are soaring
Through the twilight sky,
Watching anything alive
That their keen eye may spy.

Monstrosities are lumbering
Through the streets of Shadow Land,
Devouring anything they see
Anything that may come to hand.

Shadowy forms are slithering
After a couple late-night walking,
Unaware that death is following
Out in the late-night stalking.

Colossuses are lumbering
Through the pitch-black town,
Avoiding towering structures
Smashing smaller buildings down.

All around in Shadow Land
Savage horrors nightly creep,
Slaughtering human beings
As a farmer might slaughter sheep.

Hiding in a small forest
Near one side of Shadow Land,
Just past the nearby township
They hear slithering 'cross the sand.
