Slipping Away

Once again am I laying awake in bed
Reminiscing about the things that were said
Every word feels like a sweet embrace
So why am I overcome with a feeling of disgrace?

The night darkens, the cold seeps in
Holding onto a memory of what could have been
The heavy burden leaves me gasping for air
It was me - yelling at the world for being unfair

How does this feel light and heavy at the same time?
Since when has my heart been layered with grime?
The walls are crumbling down - I can't fix them anymore
I've been holding it together - my mind is now sore

Heavy is the head that wears the crown
You always lift me up just to bring me down
For your utter ignorance - I am to blame
As I've spent too many years playing this game

Now everything has changed for the better it seems
Yet silently it's still there - all of those screams
Too long have I lost myself in the depth of your eyes
And now you've found yourself another paradise
