Futon

White wood so cheap
to bring the price low
a bargain for those who
cannot afford anything more

stain of rich brown
to appear walnut be
applied yet so thin
that no one fooled is

mattress of batting hard
coarse fabric covered in
comfort having so brief
long enough to sold be

mattress King size is
covered in linen sheets
with blankets oh so soft
long night with comfort be

thoughts have fled away
tangled shadows just remain
twisted in the night
tortured memories remain

lovers in the spring
all time was theirs to share
joy to always be
together to always stay

fears twisted in the night
of love that would always be
now to flee away
and be parted in the night

memories still remain
in one who does recall
in sorrow tears do fall
knowing they cannot remain

for the guests who never came
in basement dark and cold
one now just make their bed
that the other and comfort will be

crying in the night
in sleep that twisted be
alone in darkness to stay
until the end of days
