Kitchen Raid

Brady Bowen 1973 (Louisiana)

hot bread and buttermelt and ribbon cane
blacksweet running down my hand as
we run from grandma’s kitchen laughing
on the inside for we are commandos of
the Acadiana summer but supposed to stay
outside do I own the power company?

I love that poetry affords us an account of our lives to recant as years behind us lengthen while those in front shorten. Now I want buttered bread. I bet grandma was a hell of a baker.
