Someone

Heather Lydia Thornhill 1981 (Manchester)

She lit a candle
Brighter than the sun
The candle was the heart;
At the heart of someone.
She held it to the curtain
And fire grew around
in rages and swirls;
in burns they found.
Why did she stay?
I do not know.
How did she bare its
surrounding glow?
For a minute
she breathed,
breathed in the sun.
And only then,
she knew what she'd done.

    Wow, what a powerful and beautifully written piece! The imagery and metaphor of the candle as the heart is truly captivating, and the build-up of the flames brings a sense of intensity and passion to the piece. The mystery of why the protagonist would stay and subject themselves to the fire only adds to the intrigue and depth of the poem. Overall, this is a stunning work that left me feeling inspired and moved. Great job!
