Strike of the Divine

Donalbain MacDuff 1998 (Adirondacks, NY)

Have you seen the strike of the godly?
Lightning that carries throughout the age.
Tales long past of its raw power,
upon the mountain side it crashes down.

These thoughts I carry as I scale its slopes,
the storm raging all around.
Rain lashing my eyes like the spray of the sea,
through the blinding water the flash is seen.

The earth trembles and the sky breaks loose,
electric particles resonate through me.
A tree far over bursts to life in a gout of flame.
Lightning strikes its crown with poise.

The higher I climb the more they fall,
I near the summit crowned in ice,
As rain turns snow the storm rages on,
The power of light is absolute.

Its awesome might brings quiet before the doom,
its sheer strength holds my eyes.
As if Thor himself calls down the heavens,
a host of angles answering the call.

Soon will it smite me down for my treasons?
The question unknown to all but they.
On mountains top I seek for truth,
only seen by those above.

What treasons may they be you ask?
For once I am afraid to speak
beyond the truths that those may know.
Only then may I be cleansed.

For broken hearts and those long dead,
the people I have left to suffer.
The things I've said to those I love,
the guilt is ever strong.

For in my fear I wonder in awe,
is this the will of gods long dead,
the science we've replaced them with.
For only I may know what satisfies.

I reach the aerie atop the mountain,
there I stand in shock and awe.
Lighting crashes all around me,
free I feel like the falcons above.

The sins I hold are washed away
by snow that melts on my skin.
I see the power of Mother Earth,
for she is fierce and strong.

Alas a calm passes through me,
my conscious mind is brought to light.
The past forgotten as lighting strikes me,
reborn I am a humbled man.
