On The Hunt

On the hunt

Пётр Дубинин

Due to binoculars, while sailing on Amur,
I found on the bank of this grand river stone giant,   *
And asked him to send a bit of luck in our tour.
He answered us OK — the luck he grant!

At last, this day my friend and I went hunting,
Three ducks I killed on so called Shaman-skewer,
We marked an opening the hunt, before a sleeping,
By dawn I seen a dream, lying on the grass bedewed.

As if few dozens horses pull a formidable wagon,    **
Instead of big BUDWEISER barrel, as was standing,
I've seen in former days, which long ago has gone,
There's iron cage with someone, and a crowd staring!

Ventura County Fair is always crowded,
Rodeo, horse racing — what's not here,
Either attraction one can found there,
Yet wagon is the highlight, so hardly can be reached.

But I break through and see (pity in a dream) wretch one,
Which already for more than twenty years,
Calluses to us eyes, pushes lie in our ears,
So that a half of the hearing ability is gone!

A plaque on his chest is fasten:
THE LAST USURPER
       OF STATE POWER!
And as appendix behind wagon on a rope minces,
Old hag, a lock of gray hair on her head beams...

 ====================================

In this point by a snoring of my crony I woke up,
And I too woke him, forcing to stand up,
Each from a kettle washed his face,
At dawn hurried to get his hunting place...

** Thoroughbred dray horses black suit, each more than two meters
at the withers, with blinkers on their eyes, they are pulling a cart,
with two meters, in diameter, wheels. A big barrel of BUDWEISER on it.
This cavalcade, forty meters long, leaves behind, big piles of a shit,
        which are quickly cleaned up.
I saw it in California in August 1990, at the Ventura County Fair.
