I am old

I am old.

And As I crest the midsummer of my years, I see the autumn stretched before me.

Is it folly to sit upon the orchard’s hill and think only of the coming winter?

I see those along the shores enjoying the summer sun and wonder if I haven’t mortgaged the benefits of youth for a fanciful dream that may not come, or be taken from me before I am ready.

And yet, only now I see the spoils of my labor of the tireless nights and fruitless conversations.

Should I forget my toils and good-will extended to those who doubted and forewarned me?

Should I lay down now and take my piece while I may still enjoy it?

I think not.

About this poem

A tune that sprung from the mind (well drenched in wine) as I pondered my impending 40th.
