SHADOWY FIGURES (II)

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Shadowy figures are soaring
Through the loathsome air,
Seeking out any living being
To add to their bill of fare.

Shadowy forms as wafting
Along in the twilight sky,
Drifting down onto their prey
Then feasting through the night.

As thin as a gossamer veil
Shadow creatures do descend,
Upon unsuspecting people
To bring life to an end.

They suck out all bodily fluids
After leeching upon their prey,
Leaving behind mere empty husks
To be discovered by the light of day.

As light as strands of cobweb
They drift upon the night wind,
Ancient carnivorous creature
From when time did barely begin.

Since the very dawn of time
Silken beings have sailed,
Through the pitch-black night
Only hoping to prevail:

Prevail to keep on living
By dehydrating the innocent,
Like vampires sucking out blood
These deadly flying filaments.

In a place named shadowland
Shadowy figures are soaring,
While on the ground below them
Their dying victims are roaring.
