What If I Forget?

Kenya Stephens 1995 (Van Wert)

Ode

Have you ever heard that elephants have wonderful memory?
It's true!
People have always told me that I share that same memory.
I remember everything that has ever happened to me since I was two years old.

My only fear is, what if I forget?

I don't want to be in a nursing home just staring out of the small window. My smile faded long ago. Sitting there like an antique porcelain doll collecting dust. My brain foggy. The memories I've onced shared with family, friends, and old flames lost along the way.

What will happen to me then?
Don't you think the nurses would consider me a pain?
What would I be good for?
I'm sure everyone would avoid my room.

Then my next biggest fear would come true, dying alone.
No one would want to visit someone who can't even begin to try to say your name.

"Sarah?" No.
"Elizabeth?" No.
"Ashley?" No.
"Mrs. Jones?" Oh.

What if I forget?
Will you be there?
Will I be safe?
Will I be happy?
Will the ones I love still come to see me?
Will my love still hold my hand?

I hope that day never comes.
I shall cherish every moment and write my special moments in a book so I can at least try to remember again.

About this poem

One of the many fears I have in this lifetime is losing all my memories. Even the bad ones. This poem really made me cry writing it. I hope it reaches old souls as well as new.
