Roadside Cross

Pete Infante 1959 (Cleveland)

Roadside Cross

Roadside cross who are you? Where were you coming from? There must be at least one that misses you now that you are gone.

His name is Jimmy, he just dropped off his girl.

They are both 20 still learning about this world.

It was a Friday night just about 10 PM, just past the 7 eleven.

He thought he was going home, not on his way to heaven.

Roadside cross who are you? Where were you coming from? There must be at least one that misses you now that you are gone.

Her name is Annie; she was just drinking at the bar.

She had too much to drink, but she wasn’t going far.

She was heading east on that road, just past 7 eleven.

Jimmy was on his way home, but now he is in heaven.

Roadside cross who are you? Where were you coming from? There must be at least one that misses you now that you are gone.

Annie is now in jail, poor Jimmy’s in the ground.

Two lives ruined here in this southwestern town.

This stuff happens every day somewhere in this land.

People's lives get ruined, when will they understand.

About this poem

Here in the southwest there are crosses and monuments at the side of the road where someone has died in an accident. It seems that a lot of these accidents were fueled by alcohol.
