Gift

I’m too big, I’m too small
I don’t fit in, blend into the wall
Caught in cycles of unforgiving despair
Living a life of unrelenting compare

I’m too short, I’m too tall
I don’t measure up, at the end of it all
Internal arguments externally presumed
How can I be if I can’t leave this room

I don’t have this, I am not that
I’m not okay, worn doormat
I can’t go out and you can’t come in
Shell protecting the vulnerable within

Mode of thinking, focused too small
Broaden perspective for wherewithal
Intermittent challenges, opportunities to grow
Sensitivity a gift, I want you to know

Bouts of dejection, to me a sign
Ability to heal others, leaving no one behind
Seeing patterns most don’t know are there
Solving problems, the rest don’t dare

This poem for you, those blessed with great care
You may not know me, but I know you’re there
You are okay, way of being a call
To lead us forward, one and all

About this poem

Do you know someone with mental "illness"? I believe for some a person's sensitivity, empathy, and broad perspective actually signifies giftedness. Those who think deeply are not "ill", they're people with greater potential to make the world a better place for all.
