ARABIAN NIGHTS

Moath Ahmad Al alem 1947 (Palestine)

ARAVIAN NIGTHS

Nigthcomes quickly to this mystic tand.
Gently soothing the blistering sand.
Crickets chirp thier ineessant song.
From dusk to dawn, the whole night long.

At my house porch all is still.
As soldier ants begin to spill.
From nooks and erannies running hither and thither.
Over grains of sand they constantly slither.

Moths of many colors flutter throughout the night,
At the clinic porch attracted by the light,
Scorpions emerge looking for dinner,
Two males looked in combat, only one the winner.

Desert spiders Dust-bin-men of the night,
Locate a decaying matter and burry it from sight,
All this I note as I silently stand,
Breathing in the magic of this virgin land.

Where else can one find so much a mystery?
Civilization as old steeped in Himyarite history,
Past the distant hills hidden from human sight,
As dawn gently stirs sending out heralds of light.

Darkness recedes, the beginning of another day,
As vigilant goat herder slowly winds his way,
Looking for green pastures amid plateau of clay,
As he always had and in future would may.

Life cycle never change, oblivious to the world,
Bedouin tribes continue to tend their camel herd,
But what would happen in thirty years from now,
Will the people by then travel by dhow?

Will the desert sand still shine and shimmer?
Will the lust for gold still glow and glimmer?
Will the West be blamed for all of this?
Causing this heavenly land so much distress?

The answer must lie in forthcoming tomorrow,
One life style is something hard to borrow,
For it is written there in the desert sand,
Across this dreamful and mystic land,

My Arabian culture is hard to spoil,
And Western tactics be boiled in oil,
For when the wells at last run dry,
And fortune hunters have said goodbye,
Arabian nights once more shall shine,
To bring peace to this land, to yours and mine.
