The Gift (Romantic Love)

Love is a precious and intangible gift
Innately desired the heart efforts and sifts
Through all who's perceived with an insatiable yearn
To no avail it's sought after, it's wished, just to learn
You can't wish its existence, it's found on a dime
It combusts out of naught in an unforeseen time
It's an emotion ignited when the chemistry's right
It's magic, it's joy, it grips your heart tight
But it's a gift that's bequeathed, not one that you own
It's given moment by moment, like a mist then it's gone
It can be yours for a day, a month, perhaps years
It can bring you much joy, or oblige many tears
If mishandled, mistreated, abandoned, ignored
You see, you must nurture it with the warmth you afford
It's as strong as an oak tree yet as fragile as its leaves
It can be destroyed in an instant, if its trust is deceived
So take heed when you find it, and VALUE it so
For you do not own it, it's a gift that's bestowed

About this poem

I woke up one Sunday thinking about Love. I was single and lonely. I was thinking about the love I desired and the mistakes I had made in my previous relationships. I felt it was important for me to write my thoughts down. It ended up becoming this poem.

I read this poem after first reading the beautiful tribute to your wife. It seems you have been both lucky in finding many moments of precious love, and you have known how to treasure it.

An interesting poem about loving someone as guys and gals will eventually do.
Beauty, however is only skin deep, it's what's inside that really counts !
Substance, that quality you can't see is what you should fall in love with !
The way they act, talk, walk and the way they express themselves to you !
Opposites may attract but to have a common bond is the glue that keeps you together for a lifetime !
I had that glue, 54 years of it.
