Shadow of the Unforeseen

Kathy L. White 1954 (California)

Be not discouraged when the day's end draws near,
And silent footsteps yield their voice to all that might have been.
You could not bear the burden, could you child?

I stood there by your side and watched you clear as the sunlight, streaming by.
If only you had seen, I would have borne you up with eagle's wings.

Thank you for the shadow of the unforeseen,
Mysterious, transcendent, sharp, and keen.
We stumble, fall, and then we call,
yet swift and strong you answer all.

But tell me,  just what might have been
had we but in the stillness, seen and heard,
and fallen in your arms,
not on the ground, but safe from harm?

Faith dwells in the shadow of the unforeseen.

"He who dwells in the shelter of the
Most High will abide in the shadow
      of the Almighty."
                                              Psalm 91:1
