Sixteen

Sixteen 1984 (Baltimore)

It's a week away from that special day
Can't believe how much you've grown
You've changed so much along the way
No one knows what the future holds
The first time I held you, my world shifted
I knew there would be many adventures ahead
In so many ways you are extremely gifted
And a pride and joy for me and your dad
You have such a wonderful heart
I can't wait to see where the future leads
Even when you go away, know that we will never be far
And will cheer for you as you go for your dreams
You have so much left to see and do
So much love to give
Every obstacle that came your way, you managed to push through
You are my greatest gift
I could live a million lifetimes
And never love someone as much as you
You may be stubborn-minded
But you are my dream come true
Before you were born I never imagined I could be a mom
Now I can't imagine not being yours
I may not always do a perfect job
But I'll always have your back for sure
So don't rush the future
Just take it full steam ahead dream by dream
People may try to rush you to become things about which you're unsure
But today, on your special day, just worry about being sixteen.

About this poem

Wrote this around the time my son was turning sixteen. Just can't believe how fast time flies.
