Evening Questions

With the day nearly done, the setting sun
lends a shadowy scene to the questions
asked by the breeze in the top of the trees,
“Whyyyyyyyyyyy?”

The older pines in staggered lines
pass along the echoing questions.
From every limb insists the wind,
“Whoooooooo?”

Who dares to ask or take me to task?
You’re nothing but a breeze gone wild
for just when I think I’m on the brink
of knowing…you change the question!

But the wind never waits to hear complaints
it incessantly whispers the questions.
High in the leaves it runs through the trees asking
“Whooooo?   Whyyyyyyy?   Whooooo?”
