NIGHT FIENDS LURKING

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

On a starless night
Evil fiends are lurking,
Plotting dreadful schemes
And all their schemes are working.

Evil after midnight
In this loathsome town,
As unwary townies sleep
Evil fiends abound.

Slithering, hopping creatures
From some nightmare place,
Stealing sleeping victims
While leaving little trace.

Blood-supping monsters
From neither future nor past,
Come to life in our time
To do their evil task.

Life essences drained
Leaving a lifeless husk,
Which collapses at first light
Leaving mounds of dust.

Barely a clue remains
Of what these fiends have done,
As they slink into shadows
As the daylight comes.

Then as the night has fallen
Horrid screeching emanates,
Like a Banshee signalling
Some lost soul’s awful fate.

From an unlit house
Slithering in the dark,
Then from a bedroom-sit
Soon shrill screaming starts.

Till no-one here is living
So the creature slinks away,
To find another victim
In some other forlorn place.
