The Door

The Door

This is the story of a girl with no name,
Though of course she couldn't have started that way.
Endlessly she roamed her world with nowhere to go,
No one to belong to and no place to call home.

She shouts to random people walking by,
Just hoping someone will stop and listen.
She knows she did nothing wrong,
But she begs to be forgiven.

They keep their head down and avert their eyes,
Hoping she will disappear.
It's not that they don't like her,
They just know she couldn't belong here.

She traveled the world alone and cold,
Her heart increasingly heavy,
Her body growing tired and old.

One day on her travels led her to the most beautiful red door,
She stopped to stare and though she longed to,
She did nothing more.

She walked away,
But it called to her heart.
It glimmered and shimmered,
A true work of art.

She dreamed she could open it,
But it didn't feel right,
So, she turned away and ran through the night.

"What could this beautiful door hide?",
She endlessly thought.
She longed to go back,
But fear told her she could not.

On she ran,
Until her legs would carry her no longer.
She threw out her arms and cursed the skies,
Just wishing she were stronger.

She knew she had gone as far as she possibly could,
So, she closed her heavy eyes and slept where she stood.
Just as every other night,
The dreams immediately came.
They were warm, and so safe, and always the same.

She was transported to a beautiful house by the lake,
There was a warm hand to hold and sweet love to make.
Her heart called out to a place that felt like a home,
But she feared it was fake and she'd always be alone.

The sun came up,
And so, it was dawn.
She opened her eyes and forced her feet to move along.

She was so lost in her thoughts,
That, at first, she didn't notice,
She was once again in front of the door.

As if she had lost control,
Her hand found the knob,
She knew she could resist not one moment more.

Her chest was heavy with terror,
And from her eye slid a single tear.
But at the end of the day,
She was sure destiny brought her here.

She summoned her courage,
Opening the door used all her strength,
She flew over the threshold,
On a literal leap of faith.

The door slammed behind her,
And her body went cold.
She smelled something musty,
Something mysterious and old.

She found herself in the mouth of a cave that was darker than a moonless night,
She threw up her fists and prepared for a fight.
Suddenly a tall figure appeared from the shadows,
With every step it took forward,
The walls of the cave shook and rattled.

Before her eyes was a man,
A most beautiful creature.
She gazed into those green eyes,
And instantly saw a new future.

His smile was so sweet as he told her not to fear,
"Come in now," he crooned, "You are so very welcome here."
He gave her his hand,
The moment she touched it she knew,
He was the one from her dreams!
Oh lord it had to be true!

This was the voice that invited her in,
That fluttered her heart and goose pimpled her skin.
He opened his arms,
She stepped in and sighed,
She buried her face in his chest,
For she had waited for him for such a long time.

He lifted her chin, kissed her and smiled,
She felt passion rush through her,
So unruly and wild.

Music was playing,
So soft and so low.
But from where it came from,
She didn't know.

He picked her up playfully and swung her around,
Then pulled her back to him,
And dipped her so low,
Her hair swept the ground.

On through the night,
They laughed and they danced.
Her eyes couldn't leave his,
She was locked in a trance.

He stole her heart,
Whether she liked it or not.
He caressed her sore body,
And consumed all her thoughts.
He tucked her so sweetly into his bed,
Cuddled her tenderly and kissed the top of her head.

She told herself that he loved her,
But, somehow, she knew,
If something seemed perfect,
It couldn't be true.

He played with her heart.
T'was his most favorite game.
She lost her identity,
And the world forgot her name.
